Highly contrasted images, grainy prints, “wild” framing, the work of Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama seems to be driven by an extreme vital impulse that has sealed his absolute refusal of the established norms of photography since his beginnings in the late 1960s. Having become one of the greatest contemporary photographers, he has imposed his aesthetic of the instantaneous as his almost existential practice of photography.

Moriyama’s nomadic eye drifts along the urban walk, relentlessly capturing sudden apparitions, fleeting or shifted visions, sources of abstract and disconcerting poetics that opened new fields and gave rise to a form of liberation of the photographic act that many artists know they owe to him.
