Publisher's description
Hong Kong Yesterday presents a singular vision of Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s by award-winning photographer, Fan Ho. Black and white images capturing life in mid-century Hong Kong range from quiet voyeuristic tableaus to chaotic crowds, most focusing on the city’s inhabitants. Businessmen, families, dockworkers, alleys, markets, and street scenes are all rendered in a style that is simultaneously abstract and humanistic.
The book Hong Kong Yesterday is the first book in Fan Ho’s trilogy, published by modernbook editions. It contains seventy-five of Fan Ho’s award-winning images and serves as an introduction to this master’s photographic body of work. There is no image duplication between Hong Kong Yesterday and the other two books completing the trilogy, The Living Theatre and Fan Ho: A Hong Kong Memoir.
Fan Ho was born in Shanghai in 1937; he immigrated to Hong Kong as child and passed away in 2016.
