Fan Ho: A Hong Kong Memoir, completes the trilogy Fan Ho began with Hong Kong Yesterday and The Living Theatre. In his previous monographs, viewers were introduced to Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s. Through his brilliant eye for light, composition, and his patience for the ‘decisive moment,’ Fan Ho created striking images that continue to resonate through the decades.

Fan Ho: A Hong Kong Memoir revisits this lost era with a combination of never-before-seen images and introduces new montaged photographs. This third and final installment includes an in-depth introduction by Mark Pinsukanjana and Bryan Yedinak as well as an afterword written by Sarah van Ingelgom.

Fan Ho experiments with the old negatives, creating new and interesting narratives of the cities landscape through overlaying the negatives on one and another. These selected compositions through the use of double negative prints create worlds that are both playful yet maintain their elegant and timeless representation of the artist’s beloved city. Fan Ho brilliantly creates new narratives and scenes by using this overlaying technique to make “something old new again.” New worlds are created and explored by the viewer, allowing people to once again rediscover Hong Kong through multiplicities of meanings and referencing.
