“This book wouldn’t exist if David hadn’t come close to death. In December 2016, David was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. The oncologist gave her a 30% chance of survival. I didn’t expect him to live.”
– Caroline Jonte-Pace.
During David’s many months of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Diane Jonte-Pace turned to a long-delayed project: arranging untagged and unsorted photographs, stored in shoeboxes throughout the house, which she and her husband, photographer David Pace, had taken over the five decades of their relationship. Organizing prints and slides dating back to the early 1970s when the couple first met gave the opportunity to reflect on their shared past and mourn the inevitable losses. The project led to the collection of photographs for this book, weaving a story of aging and change, love and hope.
Technically and stylistically, this book takes up most of the forms of photography available over the past five decades: 35mm single lens reflexes, Brownie Hawkeyes, Polaroids and disposable single-use cameras, professional cameras like the Pentax 6 7, Sinar 4 5, Deardorff 8 10, full-frame digital cannons, and more recently iPhones.
The story told by these photographs does not belong only to Diane and David. It offers a window into the past for a whole generation. “Where the Time Goes” tells the story of how the postwar generation turned the lens on themselves and tells a story of youth, aging and change through disease, hope and recovery.
