In this photobook about Vienna after Word War II, Magnum photographer Ernst Haas spreads out history as a psychic collage. His photographs show the destroyed city of Vienna as a ruin in which human scenes take place. Haas links the two as if the whole thing were choreographed. In contrast to his colleagues in Cologne, Munich and Dresden, Haas dispenses with “baroque metaphors” and, like a distant reporter, takes a close look at the city: the rubble, the returnees, the homeless, the hoarders, the crippled. Nevertheless, the repression of guilt remains permanently palpable in the images, the sufferers are not relieved from their suffering. Thus, reminding us that the actual victims of the war, whose return attracted much less photographic attention, are not shown here.
